Borgli’s comedic style does not resonate with me, so I found little humor in The Drama. Nonetheless, the leads’ precise timing enhances even the messiest ideas. Overall, however, stellar acting—including nuanced turns from a genial Athie, a sharp Haim, and a perplexed Hailey Benton Gates—cannot rescue the film from Borgli’s clumsy execution. Borgli and co-editor Joshua Raymond Lee generate momentum by juxtaposing past and present, reality and fantasy, and employing abrupt scene transitions. This cultivates an uneasy atmosphere, but the tension wanes as Emma fades into the background of Charlie’s spiraling distress, making the experience more monotonous than gripping.
